CMAT 2020 Selection Process

While cracking CMAT is an important step to become eligible for admission in AICTE approved Institutions and Universities, clearing the stage of the selection process is yet another milestone for the same. Since the examination is planned to be conducted in January 2020, the selection process will probably begin in the fourth week of February till the second week of March 2020. The call for the beginning of the selection process will be declared after the commencement of the CMAT 2020 Result and declaration of CMAT Cut-Off list.

Candidates who clear the cut-off will be able to sit for the selection process conducted by the concerned institutions. These institutions will further conduct the different rounds of selection process comprising of Group Discussion (GD), Written Ability Test and Personal Interview (PI). Among these GD will be the first round which every candidate will have to face. GD will be followed by the PI round, which will be the final round of the selection process. The Written Ability Test may or may not be conducted by the management institution. If it is added in the selection round, then it will be after or with the Group Discussion round. Candidates who qualify the selection round will become eligible to take admission in the respective colleges that they had applied for.​​

Steps of CMAT 2020 Selection Process

The CMAT Result once declared will allow candidates to look for their desired management institution along with the cut-off marks announced by these CMAT 2020 Participating Colleges. It is then that the candidates will be called for the selection procedure. The final selection process for CMAT conducted by the management institutes generally consists of the following steps:

  • Group Discussion (GD) – This is the first step of the selection process. Candidates who clear the cut-off list of the participating colleges will be called for the GD round by the respective institutions. Candidates may attend GD of more than one institution and then decide on the most suitable one or can choose to sit for only one institution.

  • Written Aptitude Test (WAT) – This is a round which might or might not be conducted for the purpose of selecting candidates for admission. It is the call of the B-School whether they want to test candidates on this parameter or not.

  • Personal Interview (PI) – This is the next step of the selection process. Candidates clearing the Group Discussion and/or Written Aptitude Test will be further called for this round. It is an important round as it will help examiners to select the best candidate for the purpose of admission in PGDM or MBA programmes.

  • Final Selection – The round that will calculate all scores is the round of final selection. Marks secured by candidates in GD, WAT and PI along with the CMAT 2020 score, will be calculated and a final list will be announced, declaring the names of the selected candidates. After the declaration of this list candidates will be eligible to take admission in their desired college for their desired course.

Details of Steps of CMAT 2020 Selection Process

Group Discussion (GD)

  • Being the first step of the selection process, GD invites more than a thousand candidates to their respective institutions.

  • Style of conducting the GD round for every college might differ but the motive of conducting this round is the same.

  • Different groups of 8-10 students are made by the concerned authorities.

  • Each group is given a topic of discussion along with a time slot for the discussion.

  • Topics for the discussion usually cover a wide range of sectors and genres including economics, social, political, sports, media and communication, leaders and their achievements, law and their amendments, etc.

  • Candidates start the discussion keeping forth their points and counter parts. It is important that each candidate argue on their point and explain a valid reason for their points.

  • The authorities will judge the candidates on their communication skills, their valid points, their contradictory versions, leadership skills, managerial understanding, etc.

  • Candidates clearing this stage will be forwarded to the next step of the selection process, which in some institution can be WAT and in some can be PI.

Written Aptitude Test (WAT)

  • The WAT as the name suggests judges candidates on their writing skills, grammar skills and understanding of the topic given.

  • Each candidate is supposed to write on any of the given topics within the time duration allotted. Candidates might also be provided with word limit to complete the write-up.

  • These topics can come from different subjects comprising mainly of Science, Technology, Politics, Social Science, Sports, Media, Law, Literature, etc.

  • Candidates attempting this section must prepare themselves to write a critical analysis on the given topic with reasonable examples.

  • Written Aptitude Test also has time duration attached to it.

  • Candidates clearing this round will be eligible for the next round of selection process, Personal Interview.

Personal Interview (PI)

  • This is the last stage of the selection process, for the candidates successfully clearing the above-mentioned round/s.

  • In this round, a panel of experts interview candidates individually.

  • There is no time boundation in this section. It depends on the interviewers, their set of questions and the answers of the candidates.

  • The area of questions can be everything and anything related to the candidate or to the course they are interested in or the rounds they have cleared.

  • A panel of experts judge the candidates on their communication skills, IQ level, General Understanding of the subject, Interest level towards the course and career, etc.

  • After clearing this round, candidates’ scorecards will be sent to the concerned authorities for final analysis and selection.

Final Selection

  • This is a round that will finalise the selection of the candidates for the purpose of admission in the respective management institution.

  • The round sums up the total marks by calculating the marks of CMAT, GD, WAT and PI.

  • After the calculations, a final list of selected candidates is released.

  • Candidates landing in the list are called for taking admission in their desired course and curriculum.

  • As per the availability of seats and requirement of the institution a second merit list also gets released.

The Selection Process usually starts after the announcement of CMAT Cut-Off list.

2. What will happen if I fail to attend the Group Discussion round?

If you fail to appear for the GD round then your candidature will automatically be cancelled from the institutions’ end.

3. If I clear the GD and PI round will my seat be confirmed for the course I want to pursue?

No, the confirmation of the seat will be finalized only after calculating all the marks and parameters of the candidates’ performance.

4. Who will confirm my candidature for the institution and the course of my choice?

The authorities of the concerned institution or university involved in the selection procedure will confirm the candidature of the candidates.

5. What will happen if I fail to report for the admission process?

If you fail to appear or report for the final admission procedure then you will lose your seat and it will be allotted to the next worthy candidate.
