About Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2019

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a national-level examination, which is conducted for candidates seeking admission in Post Graduate Programmes (M.E., M.Tech, MS, Direct Ph.D.) offered at institutes of national importance, including IITs and IISc, etc. with financial assistance from MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development). The GATE scores are also used by various PSUs for recruiting candidates for prestigious jobs. A total of 24 papers are conducted as part of GATE examination. Candidates can apply for only one of the papers based on the discipline of their qualifying degree or their admission plan. While applying for the paper of their choice, candidates must also keep in mind the eligibility criteria set by the institutions where they wish to get admission. The upcoming GATE 2019 examination schedule is given below:

GATE 2019 Eligibility Criteria

IIT Madras has set some conditions related to academic qualifications, pass percentage, age limit etc which applicants have to fulfill in order to be eligible for GATE exam. GATE Conducting Body

IIT Madras is the Organising Institute for GATE 2019. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs at Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, and Roorkee) jointly administer the conduct of GATE. The operations related to GATE in each of the eight zones are managed by a zonal GATE Office at the IITs or IISc. The Organizing Institute (OI) is responsible for end-to-end process and coordination amongst the administering Institutes.

1. What is GATE?

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India examination conducted by the seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, on behalf of the National Coordinating Board – GATE, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India.

2. What is self-financing & sponsorship in GATE?

Some institutions specify GATE qualification as mandatory even for admission of self-financing students to postgraduate programmes. GATE qualified candidates are also eligible for the award of Junior Research Fellowship in CSIR Laboratories and CSIR sponsored projects. Top rank holders in some GATE papers are entitled to apply for “Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Fellowship” awarded by CSIR. Some government organisations prescribe GATE qualification as a requirement for applying to the post of a Scientist/ Engineer.
