Calculation and Normalization of GATE Score

GATE scores are normalized to take into consideration various variations in the multiple papers as conducted. These variations could be related to various factors and especially the difficulty level of the examination.

GATE score normalization is based on the assumption that in a multi-session exam, the abilities of the candidates are equally distributed equally all the sessions. The examination authority ensures that the number of candidates in each session is of the same order of magnitude.

Note: This assumption is justified since the number of candidates appearing in multi-session papers in GATE 2019 is large and the procedure for allocation of the session to candidates is random.
